Lahaina arts Association is doing their annual Mahalo Show at the Banyan Tree Gallery in Lahaina this month. This show is a fundraiser for the free children's art classes in maui County. It's also their way of thanking the artists who have helped support them through the year. This past Friday they held the opening reception and award ceremony. I had two paintings excepted into the show so Charlie and I went to the opening.

The two yellow hibiscus paintings on the top right of the photo above are my two paintings. They are priced separately for $250, but can be purchased as a set for $400.

I was happily surprised to win the "Best In Show" award for "Hibiscus ll", as you can see from the huge smile on my face.

Such a pretty ribbon, it even matches my painting!

The unique thing about these paintings is the bevel canvas I painted them on. The photo above shows you how well they look together and shows off the bevel really well.

The Lahaina Arts Association is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to free art education for the children of Maui County, which includes the islands of Lana'i and Moloka'i. Here is their website

I just added a new class to my weekly schedule. Come learn how to do this fun new technique but I warn you, you might get hooked!

Acrylic Pouring Classes will be held on Fridays at 2PM only and is limited to two people. This class is approximately two hours long. The cost is $65. Each student will do two paintings, one 11x14 and one 8x10. More paintings can be added for an additional $15 for 8x10 or $20 for 11x14, if time and space allows.

These paintings must dry flat and will take two full days to dry. Paintings can be picked up on the following Monday. Or arrangements can be made for shipping them to you. The photos above are samples of what the paintings can look like. There is no control on end results. Each painting will be unique and can be embellished on after the paint has dried. Go to my website for examples of embellished paintings I did daricemachel.com

Embellishments can be added to dried paintings. If you wish to have help with yours you can schedule a later class. Round canvases or panels will not be available for these classes.

Last year I submitted a painting into the "Acrylicworks 5, Bold Values" competition from North Light Books and was chosen as one of the winners. There were a little over 100 artists chosen to be published in this book.

Today my copies of the book arrived and I'm blown away by the level of art represented in this book. Page after page is one outstanding painting after another. I'm truly honored and thrilled to be featured alongside such talent.

You can order a copy of this book on Amazon. Here is the link

Interview and feature

On Mother's Day an interview I did with Ourartsmagazine.com came out. I'm super happy with how good it looks. Go to this link to read it. Let me know how you like it in the comments either on the interview or here in this blog.

This morning when I woke up and was enjoying my first cup of coffee, I saw a post on facebook from Abbie Shores, the lady who did the interview. She mentioned the interview was featured on Fine Art America's facebook page. What a wonderful surprise to wake up to! Fine Art America is the website that hosts my artist website, daricemachel.com. I've been with them since 2009. There is over 100,000 artists on FAA. Getting featured is no easy task! I couldn't be more thrilled!

Running an art business is not easy. There is lots of promoting and marketing I have to do to get both my art and my art classes seen on the internet. I have a high ranking on google and Trip Adviser which helps greatly. I post pretty much everyday on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. All this takes time. So having a special feature on FAA's facebook page is a huge deal to me. Being interviewed by the Editor of an arts magazine in the UK is super huge!!!!

Boy It's been awhile

3/9/2018

I just realized it's been quite awhile since my last blog post, 1/25/2018. The last few months have been a bit more busy then usual. I've been booking and teaching a lot of classes the past three months. My art sells have been way up too, which means keeping up on painting new paintings to replace the ones that sold. In other words, life is good on Maui.

If you are on my Newsletter list then you know the exciting news I shared. If not I'm happy to repeat it here. Next month, April, I have a half page feature in the Southwest Art Magazine. I'm super excited about it!  You can get a copy at your favorite book store or through their website. And coming out in May one of my Honu paintings is featured in a book called "AcrylicWorks 5". You can pre-order a copy here. I'll talk more about this book and how I got in it in my next post.

If you want to receive my monthly newsletter I have a button on the Home page that says "Subscribe to Newsletter". Just click that on or you can email me and I'll be happy to add you.

Thanks for staying up on my news and reading my blog. Have a super Day!

Aloha nui loa

False Alarm

1/25/2018

Imagine sitting at your kitchen table on a Saturday morning enjoying a cup of coffee and reading your emails when an emergency alert flashes on your phone that says;

"Emergency Alert
BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL!"

What would you do?

When I saw this message come across my phone I was startled at fist. But as in all emergency situations, my calm reasoning took over. I got up went in to see if Charlie was awake (he was) and asked if he saw the alert message, he did. I asked "What do we do?". He got up, we went to the living room, turned on the T.V. and saw the emergency alert flashing across the screen. This one telling people to get out of their cars and seek shelter. NOT GOOD.

We both stood in front of the screen and waited for the emergency broadcast station to take over the programming to give us more information and we braced ourselves for the sirens to go off. A few seconds went by nothing happened. The cartoon that was playing on the T.V. continued to entertain us. Humm that was strange. I went to my phone and checked Facebook thinking there might be news there, nothing. One of my friends here on Maui posted asking if anyone else got the alert. I said yes. Then I checked with one of the Maui groups I follow. Everyone there was chiming in, asking questions, no one had answers. Charlie kept looking through the news outlets on his phone for information. Eight minutes goes by then finally Tulsi Gabbard, our senator posted the following statement on Twitter.

Picture
Yep, it took eight minutes to let people know this was a false alarm. It took 38 minutes for the State of Hawaii to issue the false alarm message on our phones and T.V.

After Tulsi Gabbard posted on Twitter I became very upset. Anger and relief swept over me and I did a fair share of swearing. The handling of this false alarm was not acceptable!

I'm very grateful this was indeed a false alarm. Life has pretty much gone back to normal here on Maui. Charlie is back to being super busy with all the demands of Island Printing & Imaging ( his business ) and I'm busy in my studio painting, teaching and helping a young intern learn about the business of being an artist. I'll write more about that in another blog. For now I just want to say how much I appreciate you for your continued support and love.

Thank you.
